After a serious workout or a serious meal, a bowl of fruit is the perfect treat. This bowl of kiwi, oranges, bananas, mango and strawberries provides vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, folate and potassium.
Vitamin C plays a critical role in boosting collagen. The kiwi--which is technically a berry--provides even more vitamin C than an orange. The kiwi like other fruits and vegetables in the raw form has been linked to reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases.
A recent study by the University of Otago (New Zealand), suggests that eating more fruits and vegetables in the raw vs cooked or processed improves mental health. The study compared forms of consumption of fruits and vegetables vs quantity.
Consumption of unmodified fruits and vegetables proved to have a better mental health impact, including mood boost, positive feelings and reduced symptoms of depression. The researchers concluded that more nutrients are available for the body in fruit and vegetables that are uncooked.
Since many dieters are choosing low carb until the cows come home, fruit is a no-no. However, significant research suggests that perceptions about sugar in fruit are misguided. One study indicated that a diet of natural fructose from fruit, actually improved weight loss.
There are so many valuable nutrients in fruit and unprocessed sugars that the benefits outweigh any perceived negatives. Everything in balance. One less fancy latte, one more apple.
