A Golden Milk Latte Can Calms And Centers Your Mind on Hectic Days

During those weeks where the challenges come at you faster than fruit flies around a banana, a golden milk latte brings a special kind of calm.

When I was younger, turmeric and almond milk--components of golden milk--were not foods that appeared on grocery shopping lists. My mom bought milk in glass bottles from the local dairy distributor until that closed down. After that she purchased milk from the chain grocery store down the street. 

I drank a lot of milk. As a high school athlete participating in everything from varsity soccer to tennis, a big tall glass of milk and plate of spaghetti and meatballs with dinner after practice was my heaven.

The most orange beverage I had while I was growing up (apart from orange Fanta) was a mango lassi. 

While living in New York City, and working on Treatmo, my first encounter with golden milk was through brands that had become our partners. I had a small but functional kitchen in New York and made a lot of food. But it wasn't until I left the convenience of the New York City neighborhood I lived in and those local healthy food cafes that made golden milk that I finally decided to make my own. I'm glad I did.

By this time the number of food staples had expanded in the Treatmo marketplace. I easily shopped organic turmeric, raw almonds and honey and decided to make my own golden milk latte. 

Making almond milk from scratch, warming it for the latte, adding in my favorite spices, including immunity boosting ginger, is a new ritual I've come to love. Taking a pause from the chaos of whatever is happening around me and focusing on the simple, meditative preparation of a golden milk latte is a welcome pleasure. 

Enjoying the final homemade cup is even better. The cayenne and ginger give this cup of golden milk a kick, while the sweetness of the honey tempers it enough to balance out the heat. This is an energizing, but calming drink that helps you completely reset.

Golden Milk Latte Recipe

  • 1 cup almond milk (I like making almond milk fresh using Fat Uncle Farms almonds)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon reishi
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 tablespoon honey (I like raw honey from Fat Uncle Farms)
  • 1 cinnamon stick

To make your almond milk, add a 1/2 of a cup of raw almonds and 1 1/2 cups water to a blender. Blend until the almonds are pureed completely. Using a cheese cloth, strain the milk through to separate any remaining pieces of almond.

Place 1 cup of almond milk into a sauce pan and heat on medium low until warm. While the milk is steaming, add all of your ingredients, including finely grated ginger (I like all of the ginger fibers, but you can strain the juice), to a bowl. 

Once the milk is ready, pour it into the bowl and mix everything together! My mom now loves them too, so I always make two cups whenever she's around.
