Jackfruit BBQ Sandwich Recipe
Easy to make and fun to eat VEGAn SAndwich with A vegan BBQ Sauce
Jackfruit is a large fruit that grows out of the trunk of the jackfruit tree in the same way that cacao pods grow out from the cacao tree. Some jackfruit can way as much as 120 lbs. Because of this it's an incredible food source where it grows naturally in the southwestern part of India, especially Kerala, and in some Southeast Asian countries. The fruit is a yellow orange in color and naturally sweet.
For vegan and vegetarian cooking, the young unripe jackfruit is less sweet and has a texture similar to meat or tuna. It flakes apart like tuna and when cooked looks more like pulled pork. As such, it's a nice meat replacement for the texture and can go into recipes such as tacos, burritos, chili, and tuna "fish" sandwiches. It's not a big source of protein, but provides fiber, potassium, and Vitamin C, among other nutrients.
Jackfruit also goes well with BBQ sauce. In fact, a jackfruit BBQ sandwich tastes just like any other BBQ sandwich and is very filling. For vegans, if you're looking for alternatives to BBQ tempeh or tofu, a jackfruit BBQ is a wonderful treat.
Some health focused grocery stores offer canned young jackfruit and you can also find it online. We tried Edward and Sons and it was wonderful. Our BBQ sauce of choice for this sandwich was The OKB Sauce which is vegan and is a low sodium and sugar. It's a Southern style and natural, small batch BBQ sauce with a very tangy flavor.
