Three Tips For A Healthy Heart This Month
February is American Heart Month and it's a good time to think about ways to make your heart stronger.
Heart disease is one of the leading chronic illnesses among both men and women in the U.S. However, it is one that can be prevented with diet and lifestyle changes. According to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn of the Cleveland Clinic and from the movie Forks Over Knives, it can be reversed.
First, focus on diet. Eat an abundance of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and beans. Try to reduce excessive oils in your food and cut out animal based foods as much as possible. Plant based foods can help your heart health in a number of ways including improving blood flow and repairing damaged blood vessels.
Second, exercise more. It's important to get your heart rate up. Go for a brisk walk, do stairs, and try simple exercises like squats or jumping jacks. Keep the body limber through yoga exercises and any other type of stretching positions.
Third, sleep well. Getting good quality sleep every night is essential. Try to get into a cycle and go to sleep early and wake up early. When you sleep well, you're more likely to eat better and have the energy to exercise as well.
